The Eliq Platform delivers Energy Insights for both residential homes and businesses. It enables apps to provide engaging and actionable insights for both types of users within a single app, or you can create apps tailored specifically for one or the other, depending on how you prefer to serve your entire customer base.
While the core insights remain similar, they are adapted to account for key differences between residential homes and businesses.
What can we offer Businesses?
The Energy Insights that Eliq provides are tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which represent the majority of businesses in Europe. These businesses have similar needs to residential customers in their desire to better understand their energy usage, identify what is consuming energy, and discover ways to improve efficiency and save money.

How does it work?
For the Eliq platform to provide the most relevant Energy Insights for both residential homes and businesses, each location added to the platform must be designated as either a residential or business location. The type of location determines which insights are delivered and how they are presented.
The location type can be set in the Eliq platform through the Data Management API or the Insights API, depending on your preference for providing this information. If the location type—residential or business—is known in advance, it’s best to specify it when creating the location through the Data Management API. If this information is unknown or if the end user should make the selection, the user can be prompted to specify the location type during the onboarding process before completing their location profile.
Many of Eliq’s features are available to both residential homes and businesses. To ensure smooth and easy implementation for developers, the same endpoints in the Insights API can return insights for both types of locations. However, the content of those endpoints and the insights they provide will vary depending on whether the location is set as residential or business.
The Location Profile Endpoint
A Location Profile is key to providing relevant and actionable energy insights for every location on the platform. The Location Profile presents a set of questions to be asked of each end user during app onboarding. The answers provided are used to generate relevant energy insights from the Eliq Platform for both residential homes and business locations.
To ensure the Eliq platform returns the correct insights for each location, the Location Profile Type must be set to either Residential or Business. This designation determines two things:
- Whether the end user should complete a Residential Profile or a Business Profile.
- Whether the energy insights returned for the location should be tailored for residential or business use.
The Location Profile Type can be set through the Eliq Insights API by asking the end user to specify if the location being onboarded is a Residential Home or a Business. The response is then posted through the POST /v3/locations/{locationId}/profile/type endpoint.
Additionally, the value can be set through the Eliq Data Management API to accommodate cases where the app does not need to ask the end user to select the location type because it is already known. In such cases, the end user will proceed to the next step and be prompted to complete the appropriate profile, either Business or Residential.
